CIE232: Discomfort Caused by Glare
from Luminaires with a Non-Uniform Source Luminance
/ APPLICATIONS / CIE232
Evaluating glare
Unified Glare Rating (UGR) by CIE is most often used to estimate discomfort glare for indoor lighting systems. UGR is based on the average source luminance. LED-based luminaires have often several bright spots instead of an even luminous area. UGR cannot well estimate discomfort glare in such cases.
CIE 232 describes a method for calculating the effective luminous area that gives a UGR-values that are in good agreement with experimental data decribing perceived discomfort glare from non-uniform light sources like LED based luminaires.
The method
The method is starts with the luminance image of the nonuniform luminous area. Image processing mthods are the applied to this image resulting to a uniform square image that can be used in UGR calculations.
